Inspired by a deep love for good food and a desire to share it with the world, Alekar Foods was founded in 2023 in the village named Karkamb, located in the Solapur district of Maharashtra. How did the name ‘Bajar Amti’ come about? The story related to it was told by the elderly. There was a time during 1965 or even before when people from Karkamb and surrounding towns used to come together for their groceries and other needs. There was a big market place where all traders and buyers used to come. They all carried their lunch, which mainly comprised bhakri, a mixture of various dals, and some spices. When it was time for lunch, they used to light a fire upon stones and make ‘amtis’ from the dal mixture and another spice mixture that they carried from home. Bhakri and this amti used to be on the lunch menu for most of these traders and buyers. The amti to be made on ‘bajar’ (Marathi term for market) days thereafter came to be called bajar amti. Over time, this amti became very famous. Due to the complicated way of making amti, not everyone could make it at home and its consistency made it difficult to carry around. Because of this reason, many people wanted to eat amti but could not make it. So, we made instant gravy so anyone can prepare amti at home just by adding water, and anyone can taste the taste of Karkamb’s amti. The journey of Alekar Foods began with a simple yet ambitious idea: to create food products that not only satisfy hunger but also tantalize taste buds and evoke emotions.
